Lunar Sketches

I observed and sketched the targets on the Astronomical League’s Lunar I list between 1 March 2004 and 1 October 2005. There is no actual sketching requirement for this list other than some of the optional activities but I decided to do it anyway, just for fun. Melissa and I also had fun on our quest to spot the thin crescent Moon just before and just after its new phase (items 1-4 on the list). She accompanied me on a couple of early morning outings and usually spotted the thin crescent before I did.

Items 1-18 are all naked eye targets and items 19-64 are all binocular targets. Many of these are shown together on the same sketch. Items 65-100 are telescopic targets, all of which are sketched individually. I don’t consider myself to be much of an artist and some drawings here are better than others but I tried to represent what I saw as best I could.

All of the binocular observations were made through 7×35 birding binoculars. All of the telescopic observations were made through my 12.5” Dob.
